Lakeland city commissioners agreed Monday to hire Furr & Wegman, Architects, of Lakeland to be the primary consultant overseeing the design of the city's planned Common Ground park.

Common Ground will be a fully inclusive play park, where children with various abilities and disabilities will be able to play with each other and anyone else, regardless of physical ability.

Construction of the park is scheduled to begin in the 2008 fiscal year. A master plan for the park is to be completed in the fall. Construction drawings are to be completed in spring 2007 to coincide with fundraising efforts and the auction of the Kaleidoscope Butterflies scheduled to be placed throughout downtown. The Kaleidoscope project is patterned after the Swansation public art project in 2002.

The contract with design firm calls for it be paid a fee not to exceed $126,000.
